About the Dog Seat Belt Blog
Last summer in two separate instances, I saw dogs jump from moving vehicles.
On a beautiful Sunday afternoon, I was driving up Laguna Canyon Road on my way back to San Diego after spending the day in Laguna Beach. There was a long line of cars so luckily we weren’t going fast. Suddenly a dog jumped from the cab of the pick up truck in front of me. Some cars stopped, but not all as the dog ran wildly between the owner frantically trying to catch him and the brush on the side of the road. They caught the dog, returned him to the truck and continued on their way. I’m sure their hearts were beating as fast as mine at the thought of the dog running the other way into the on coming traffic.
About a month later, I was walking through Coronado Village and was just about to cross Isabella Avenue. A SUV turned off from Orange Avenue and a small white ball of fur launched itself out of the back seat. People on the sidewalk reacted quickly and we circled the frantic dog and someone scooped him up. As the owner put the dog in the backseat of the vehicle, he was yelling at the crying child that was “…supposed to be holding him!”
A child is no substitute for a dog seat belt or dog car harness.
Happily neither time, no dog nor person was hurt or even worse killed. As I began to do some research, I found that this is not always the case. There are horror stories everywhere about dogs being hurt and killed because their owners did not use a dog safety restraint.
I decided that the best way to get the word out and educate people about riding safely with their dogs was to start a blog about it.
